I decided to reward him for his kindness by offering him my bottles. The only problem was how to do it without hurting him. Finally, I told him that I was very busy and asked him to deal with my bottles. When he asked how he would give me the money, I answered I just wanted to get rid of the bottles. His shy smile spread. I was happy I had done the right thing. He said, “OK. Thanks a lot.” I responded to him, “That's all right. See you.”

A feeling of lightness, which had nothing to do with leaving my bottles behind, enveloped me. That day seemed brighter than it was. On my way home, I thought the bottles might bring the man two or three dollars. I wondered what he could get with that money — maybe a cup of coffee, maybe an ice cream for his child, or something else. As for me, playing a small part in helping him made a difference to my life too. I was happy to recycle the kindness offered by a man whose smile was very warm.
