As is indicated in the bar chart, the expenditure on the new form of shopping for residents in cities grew dramatically from $10 million in 2009 to $50 million in 2019. Compared with cities, those living in the countryside seemed to rely less on it, and thus the amount was much smaller. Still, it increased several times over the same period of time.
Generally, the reasons may come down as follows. In the first place, it is the result of technological development. In recent years, not only has internet found its way into almost every household, the advance of technology has also enabled manufacturers of cell phones and telecommunication companies to low prices considerably, thus making it extremely easy for buyers to purchase nearly everything on the tiny “magic screen” merely with a touch. Apart from the influence of technology, another possible explanation is continuous economic prosperity and rapid rise of people’s living standard. Previously, few of us could manage to afford the luxuries in TV commercials with the meagre income we had. Fortunately, the turn of the century has seen explosive economic growth. As a result, we can fulfil the dream for both necessities and luxuries.
Is it a blessing or a curse? Opinions differ. When we enjoy the convenience and lower price, thousands of physical shop owners are struggling on the verge of bankruptcy. Hopefully, they can find a new way out.
