I am delighted to share a piece of news about China’s latest scientific breakthrough with you. Chinese agricultural scientist Yuan Longping and his research team have harvested saltwater- tolerant rice on a plot of saline-alkali land in Qingdao, Shandong Province.
As we all know, rice usually requires a field with a plentiful supply of fresh water. But now Yuan Longping makes it possible for rice to grow in saltwater. Professor Yuan, also known as China’s “father of hybrid rice”, has been highly appreciated for making full use of saline-alkali land. It is estimated that saltwater-tolerant rice can feed more than 200 million people.
I take great pride in this scientific achievement of my country because it will bring hope to hungry people all around the world.
